General Print Information
Raster Image vs. Vector Image
→ Images designed for the web are NOT suitable for printing! ←
Color Mode = CMYK: Submitting your files as 4 color CMYK. Full color printing process requires artwork to be saved in four-color process as CMYK (cyan, magenta, yellow and black) color mode.
Bleed: Bleed size is 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch outside of the final Print size. Applies to Decals/Stickers/Corrugated sign art.
• The higher the DPI (dots-per-inch), the greater the resolution providing a much clearer image. However, higher resolution images create a much larger file size which creates a much longer upload speed.
• Image resolution is directly related to an image's physical size. Higher resolutions allow the image to be enlarged without disrupting overall clarity. Lower resolutions do not allow for images to be enlarged as the image will become pixelated.
• For printed images, the ideal resolution is 300dpi (dots-per-inch). For printed images containing text, the ideal resolution is 400dpi.
• Vector images are composed of individual objects and include lines, shapes and other different attributes such as color.
• Vector images are resolution independent - scaling images does not affect the quality of the artwork.
• Vector images are normally much smaller in file size than other file types such as .JPG, .JPEG, .PDF, etc.
• Vector images are NOT suitable for photo-realistic reproductions.
• Fonts are vector objects and must be outlined or embedded before artwork is submitted.
* How to check the dpi of the jpg. Right click on the Jpg file, then left click properties, then left click on Details tab, look at horizontal and vertical resolution it will tell you what the Pixel size is and also what the DPI is and plug those numbers in the formula below.Using these pixel dimensions, you can now calculate the maximum reproduction size of the file: Example 5400 x 9000 pixels divided by the dpi
- All Fonts must be supplied if not outlined to insure text will not shift or default to another font. (Rasterize the Fonts when using Photoshop).
Outline Fonts :
Since there are literally thousands of fonts available on both Mac's and PC's, it becomes a problem to be sure that everyone has access to the same fonts and can display your images properly. When digital art is supplied with missing fonts, we cannot process your job in production. The answer to this problem is to either embed your fonts, or convert them to outlines. Outlining fonts will allow us to insure text will not shift or default to another font.
More Helpful Tips:
• Most computer monitors do not accurately represent true resolution. To see if your image is print ready, zoom in 300%-400%. If the image is still clearly visible and your edges are clean, then your image is ready to be printed. If your image becomes very blurry and pixelated, the image you are choosing might not be print ready and therefore will cause a blurry print.
• When taking pictures from a digital camera for your print project, it is best to set your camera to the highest resolution setting.
• Four-Color Printing Process uses the CMYK color mode. Most digital cameras and scanners will take RGB pictures
• Saving files in lossless file format such as .TIF and .EPS will help maintain accuracy and color quality.
• Bitmap images should not be used when submitting files for printing. Bitmap images (.BMP) are rasterized images and are normally saved in a lower file size. Therefore, files can be scaled without proper aspect ratio's and in the ending result be distorted or have color defects.
• If you wish to print 'Pure Black' you will need to set your 'black' color to: 50% Cyan, 50% Magenta, 50% Yellow and 100% Black.
NOTE: In order for SBT to offer low pricing to its customers we require that our customer's artwork have minimum requirements for printing. These requirements help to ensure that the finished product will be of the highest standards and will reduce artwork modifications by our art staff. Please review the artwork minimums and if you agree that your artwork meets these minimums then proceed with order(s). If your artwork does not meet these minimums, your artwork may need to be modified by our art staff for an additional minimal charge of $60/hr.
